I used to think an “apologist” was somebody who apologized on behalf of a group. When I first heard the term “Christian apologist” (later in life than I should have), I just got confused and imagined a little man kind of flustered and embarrassed, shrugging his shoulders and stammering about how “they really do mean well”.
