The Master

I saw Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master in 70mm last night. It was very good! The thing that continues to amaze me about PTA is how he manages to get jaw-droppingly good performances from all of his principal actors in all of his movies. Even if he’s working with an actor that is already legendary, he will somehow push them beyond what they’ve done before. I was thinking about it just now and I’ve come up with a list of actors that have arguably given the best performances of their careers in one of Paul Thomas Anderson’s films.

  • Mark Wahlberg
  • Burt Reynolds
  • Julianne Moore
  • Tom Jane
  • John C. Reilly
  • Heather Graham
  • Alfred Molina
  • Philip Baker Hall
  • Luis Guzman
  • Tom Cruise
  • Adam Sandler
  • Emily Watson
  • Daniel Day-Lewis
  • Joaquin Phoenix
  • Philip Seymour Hoffman (he’s in four of Anderson’s movies that I can think of, but I’m referring to The Master here)
  • Amy Adams

In any case where an actor was prominently in both Boogie Nights and Magnolia, assume I’m talking about their performance in Boogie Nights.

I also noticed that P.T. Anderson has cast comedians in minor roles in his last two movies (Paul F. Tompkins in There Will Be Blood and Jillian Bell in The Master) and I hope that becomes his new thing.
