em-aytch asked: What's wrong with the new CTA cars? Other than awkwardly staring at the person across from you for your entire ride if you forgot to bring a book.

The seating arrangement is extremely awkward if the train is crowded, and it opens up inconsiderate assholes to the opportunity to take up more than two seats at a time if they want to. And you can’t really look out the window if you’re sitting down, which I like to do.

What were you doing?

Just some freelance stuff. Normally I’d go whenever I wanted, but they have limited computers there and I guess one of their full time staff people needed to use it. He said it would be okay to come in whenever and take over, but I felt bad putting him out so I volunteered to come in at 8:00 so I would be done with the small thing I needed to do before he got in. It actually feels nice to already have that shit out of the way, so no regrets.

What happened?

I ran into three of them on the way out of a dungeon that I was already done with. One of them cast some bullshit that insta-killed everyone in my party except Zidane, and before I could get Zidane to revive someone, the other tonberry stabbed him. I hadn’t saved in over an hour and I was on my way out of a dungeon that I was already done with goddammit.

Really? A quick ebay search brought up a lot of hits that don’t seem too bad. I mean, $100 seems like a pretty middle-of-the-road price for a relatively old rpg for Playstation. Not as bad as Valkyrie Profile was at one point, at least.

I’ve never had a problem finding a used playstation RPG for less than $60 until I tried to find a copy of Xenogears. $100+ may be common, but it’s definitely not something I’ve encountered so I consider that hard to find.

Hah, fair enough. I’ll put it on my list of games I’d like to try but I shouldn’t rush to or anything.

It’s also pretty hard to find for a reasonable price. The only reason I was able to play it is because Peter somehow got his brother to lend it to me. I wish I owned it, because I feel like I’d appreciate the story even more on a playthrough where I had a better idea of what was going on.

…I need to play this game.

I can’t tell if I think you’ll like it or not. People who have played it tend to be split down the middle. I usually describe it as a heavily flawed masterpiece. It kind of reminds me of Chrono Cross in that the first disc is amazing and the second disc starts to suffer from an overly convoluted plot that the developers had trouble conveying. In Xenogears’s case it’s a little more understandable, since Square pulled bunch of resources and manpower in the middle of production so they could work on Final Fantasy VIII, and what was intended to be the fifth part in a six part series that would have the background story filled in with prequels quickly turned into “you guys are going to have to do the whole story in one game because we’re probably not going to let you make more.” As a result, the second disc is extremely linear and has a lot of extremely ham-handed exposition because they needed to tell six games worth of story in one game that had been cut from 80 hours to 60 hours.

The story itself, however, is totally insane and beautiful and probably one of the most epic things I’ve ever experienced.

em-aytch asked: How's FF9 been?

Good! I’m on the third disc and will probably beat it in the next couple of weeks. It’s basically all of the gameplay aspects that I actually like from the older Final Fantasies mixed with some of the later innovations of the series that I actually like. The ability learning system is like FFVI except characters have set classes that make them only able to learn some abilities and not others. I guess I can see people finding that restrictive, but I always got bored with the abilities and VII and VIII because anyone could do any ability ever and the only practical differences between any of the characters is minor stat differences and limit breaks. I’m probably in the minority on this, but I think characters in JRPGs having set character classes (with some room for customization within that system) adds richness to the characters themselves and makes me understand their role in the story/party better than if I’m just controlling a big group of people who are functionally the same.

This has gotta be a Poe’s Law thing.

Nah, the dude is a well known MRA on that site. It’s just reddit being reddit.

The thing I don’t get about this: What parent in the history of the universe has ever told their child “Now if a man offers you candy, he is definitely a rapist and you should run away, but if it’s a woman then FREE CANDY GO FOR IT KID!” I have said this many times, but the MRM just completely makes things up to be offended about, and the fact that they consistently mock feminist groups for protesting actual oppression is one of the funniest things in the world to me.
